The threat escalated from mockery to conspiracy. Nehemiah's response was twofold: "we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night" (4:9). Prayer without vigilance is presumption; vigilance without prayer is self-reliance. He refused to choose between them. Then Nehemiah surveyed his defenses and stationed people "in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places." He reinforced not the strong sections but the weak and exposed ones. Walls fail where they are lowest. So do we. Every believer has low places—a particular hour of the day, a season of loneliness, a screen, an appetite, a wounded memory, an unguarded relationship where temptation reliably finds an opening. Wisdom does not pretend these places don't exist; it stations guards there. That may mean honest accountability, firm boundaries, Scripture memorized for that specific battle, or removing what feeds the weakness. Resisting the devil is rarely a single act. We "resist the devil, and he will flee" as we keep submitting ourselves to God (James 4:7). It is often a repeated stand, sustained by grace. Be honest about your low places. Then fortify them, and let the God who fights for His people hold the line.
